Puerto Rican Iced Café con Leche: A Ratio That Survives the Ice

An iced café con leche recipe that anticipates dilution and keeps its body in tropical weather.

Ice is not passive: it melts, changes the ratio and reduces aroma. For iced café con leche to keep its identity, the base must be slightly stronger and cooled before meeting a large volume of cubes.

Recipe at a glance

Yield: One 300 ml glass
Time: 10 minutes
Best coffee: Concentrated medium-roast coffee

Ingredients

  • 90 ml concentrated coffee
  • 90 ml cold milk
  • 10–15 g sugar or simple syrup, optional
  • 100–120 g large ice cubes

Method

  1. Dissolve sweetener in hot coffee when using it.
  2. Cool the coffee rapidly in a container set over ice.
  3. Fill the glass with large cubes and add milk.
  4. Pour in cooled coffee, stir briefly and serve.

Why this ratio works

Equal coffee and milk preserve strength, while large cubes melt more slowly than crushed ice.

Adjust it without losing the coffee

For more intensity, use 110 ml coffee and 70 ml milk. For less caffeine, keep volume with milk or water rather than extending a harsh extraction.

Troubleshooting

A watery drink needs stronger coffee, less melted ice or pre-chilling. Sugar at the bottom should be dissolved before cooling.

Serve and store safely

Chill quickly and consume immediately. Do not leave milk coffee in the sun or reuse partially melted ice.
